Accessibility

We want every student to be able to play, read and join. Here is where we honestly stand today.

Goal: WCAG 2.2 AA
Statement
Last reviewed 1 October 2026

The short version

What you can count on today.

  • Our goal is WCAG 2.2 level AA, the common standard for accessible websites. We meet most of it, not all of it yet.
  • The pages, menus and forms work with a keyboard, with a clear focus ring and a "Skip to content" link first.
  • The Motion switch in the top bar stops animations, and we follow your device's reduce-motion setting.
  • Nothing on the site flashes more than three times a second.
  • Pages fit a phone and work zoomed in to 400%, without sideways scrolling.
  • Signing in needs no password: just a 6-digit code from your email, which you can paste.
  • Some mini games are hard or impossible without sight or quick hands. You never need one to join or to read anything.
  • Found a barrier? Write to hello@mindquest.org. We aim to answer within 5 working days.

Our goal

MindQuest is for every student, including students who use a screen reader, a keyboard, zoom or other tools. We are building the website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.

Today the website partly meets WCAG 2.2 AA: most of it does, and the parts that don't yet are listed below, with what we offer instead.

What works today

  • Keyboard: the pages, menus and forms work with a keyboard. A clear focus ring shows where you are, and a Skip to content link comes first on every page.
  • Motion: the Motion switch in the top bar pauses animations across the site and remembers your choice. If your device asks for reduced motion, we follow it on our own.
  • No flashing: effects never flash more than three times a second. The game code enforces this on every page.
  • Forms: every field has a visible label. When something is wrong, we say what and how to fix it in words next to the field, never with colour alone.
  • Signing in: no passwords and no puzzles. We email you a 6-digit code; you can type it, paste it or let your phone fill it in. The bot check usually runs without asking you anything.
  • Your hero: every choice in the hero maker has a name a screen reader can read, and the hero picture has a text description of your look.
  • Zoom and phones: pages reflow to fit a phone and keep working when you zoom in to 400%, without sideways scrolling.
  • Contrast: our main text colours meet the AA contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1.
  • Structure: pages use real headings, lists, tables and landmarks, and they say which language they are in, so screen readers can move around easily.
  • Pictures and video: images that carry meaning have a text alternative, and decorative ones are hidden from screen readers. Our short videos have no speech, start muted with a play and pause button, and each has a text description.
  • Time: a sign-in code lasts 10 minutes, and you can ask for a new one at any time. What you typed on /join stays while you fetch the code.

What doesn't work well yet

  • The mini games on /try are drawn on a canvas, and many need quick taps, timing or sight. A screen reader can't follow the picture, and some games can't be played without seeing the screen.
  • Game cues may rely on colour, movement or position alone.
  • The bot check on /join and /account is made by Cloudflare. It usually runs on its own, but if it shows a challenge you can't solve, write to us and we will help you make your account.
  • Our pixel headings use the Pipette font. Some people find pixel letters harder to read, so all body text uses a plain reading font.
  • Screen readers: we have not yet tested every page with every screen reader. If something reads badly, please tell us.
  • Language: the site is in English only for now.

What we offer instead

  • Nothing on the website needs a mini game: you can read every page, make your account and design your hero without playing one.
  • Each mini game's page says in words what the game is and what it shows about MindQuest.
  • If a game or any part of the site doesn't work for you, write to us. We will help you directly, and what you tell us shapes how the real game is built.

How the site works with your tools

The website is built with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and WAI-ARIA, and it relies on them to work with your browser and assistive tools. It is made for current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on computers and phones.

How we checked

We assessed the website ourselves; there has been no outside audit yet. Our build tools check, for example, that touch targets are at least 44 px and that nothing scrolls sideways at phone width. We also tried our pages with a keyboard, at 320 px wide (like zooming in to 400%), and with motion turned off.

Tell us about a problem

Write to hello@mindquest.org with Accessibility in the subject. Tell us the page, what you were trying to do and, if you like, the device, browser and tools you use.

We aim to answer within 5 working days. If we can't fix the problem quickly, we tell you when we will, and we help you another way in the meantime.
